If you weigh your puppy every week and record the weight it will be possible to check his or her progress against an ideal growth chart for the breed. If you have any doubts about your puppy’s progress, consult your vet.
Puppies increase their body weight rapidly compared to children. (The normal birth weight of puppies ranges from 1% of their adult body weight in the case of giant breeds to 6.5% for Chihuahuas.) On average a puppy gains 5% in weight each day, and most puppies weigh half their adult body weight by 4-5 months old. The aim is for your puppy to be alert, lean and healthy with a good growth rate.
